How to follow up on your job applications

So, you know how to create an impressive CV and you’re an application form genius. Interviews? No problem!

However, do you know how to follow up on job applications?

This is something a lot of job hunters tend to overlook, especially if you’re a graduate who’s new to the game.

While businesses want to employ individuals who have the right skills and experience, enthusiasm for the role is also massively important. One way of demonstrating this is by making sure that you follow up on your application.

It’s not always possible for employers to get back to everyone or, sometimes, CV’s can simply be forgotten.


Why follow up?

Following up on a job application says a lot about who you are to a potential employer and can boost your chances of success. Some great reasons to do so include the following:

  • It demonstrates enthusiasm
  • You can show that you take initiative
  • You’re less likely to be forgotten about
  • Employers will be able to see that you are determined

This applies before and after the interview stage.

However, be warned; there is a fine line between being enthusiastic and being overly keen.

For this reason, knowing how to follow up on job applications is an art in itself. Here are some tips to bear in mind, how to follow up on your job applications before and after the interview stage:


Before your interview

  • We have all experienced the long wait between sending off a job application and receiving a response from the employer.
  • Once you’ve sent your application, double-check if the company you’ve submitted your details to have a set timescale for processing them. For example, have a look to see if there is a note in the job advert or an auto-response email saying when candidates will be contacted.
  • Avoid following up within this time period, as you are likely to be told to wait. If there isn’t a timescale specified, it’s best to leave it at least a few days before following up.
  • At this point, it’s advisable to follow up by email. Ensure that the tone of your email is professional and friendly; don’t appear to be impatient, pushy or rude.

After your interview

  • If you were lucky enough to score an interview, more waiting lies ahead! However, you can make sure that you make a lasting impression by following up afterwards.
  • The first thing to do once you’ve attended a meeting with a potential employer is to send an email thanking the interviewer/s for their time.
  • After a few days, if you still haven’t heard anything, you can follow up via email if you wish.
  • However, at this stage, it is probably best to follow up via telephone, as this is much more personal. Again, remember your manners and professionalism! Following up via telephone also gives you another opportunity to express your interest in the role.



How to follow up on your job applications is always a tricky question. With the job market being as competitive as it is, a lot of vacancies receive a high volume of applicants. So it’s not always possible for the HR manager to get back to each person.

This is why following up on any job application is advisable, even before you’ve attended an interview.
