‘Graduate’ and ‘scheme’ are two words that will be very familiar to anyone finishing up at university. These highly popular training programmes are all you hear about! However, for one reason or another, you may not get a place on a grad scheme.

With deadline windows closing, should you be worried if you don’t?

Let’s be clear: Graduate Schemes are not the only option available for international students.

Remember, everyone has different career goals and each individual works in a different way. In fact, while graduate schemes might be perfect for some, others may find that this type of role just isn’t right for them.

Either way, there are plenty of other options available to graduates wanting to start their career.

Don’t panic!

If your friends all seem to be securing places on grad schemes and you haven’t been successful, there’s no need to panic. Graduate schemes are extremely competitive, sometimes with hundreds of applicants for one single role.

Remember, it’s a numbers game! The more jobs you apply to, the higher your chances of job success.

Maybe you didn’t apply for a graduate scheme because you weren’t sure it was the right choice. That’s OK, too!

Your career is a big deal, so you need to make the best decision for you at the time. You’re bound to make mistakes along the way, but stick with your gut and enjoy the journey.

“I don’t know what I want to do!”

Sound familiar? Graduate schemes tend to have a set goal at the end, your path is laid out for you. Which is great for those who already have very specific career goals.

However, this isn’t ideal for graduates who are still figuring things out.

Many people ‘fall’ into their careers or find their path later in life. So, if you don’t know what you want right now, don’t worry – you’re not alone!

There’s nothing wrong with exploring your options.

There are no guarantees

Even if you do have a career path laid out in your mind, graduate schemes don’t guarantee that you’ll reach your goals.

Yes, many grads are very, very successful and progress from these programmes, however, there are others who have a change of heart or find themselves without a job once the scheme is complete.

Just because you didn’t get on a graduate scheme doesn’t mean that you’ve missed your chance for success. There are so many ways you can reach the top!

Rome wasn’t built in a day

People spend years getting to a point in their career at which they’re happy. Others get lucky in the world of work very quickly.

Be patient, there’s no hurry for you to become a CEO overnight!

Everyone has to start somewhere and graduate schemes are just one of many potential stepping stones.

Whatever job you get after uni will require you to start at the bottom and work your way up. You’ll grow and learn along the way whether you’re on a graduate scheme or not!

Your options: what now?

Graduate schemes are great, but they aren’t the only option for grads. There’s nothing wrong with giving different things a go, as long as you don’t become a serial job hopper (this doesn’t look great on your CV!).
